Ghost Character Design – Step by Step

By Mark Horton Last Updated: January 30, 2023

If you need to design a ghost character, you have practically no limits, because there are no standards for the appearance of a ghost.

There are typical banal images, and not quite a standard solution for the needs of a specific project. We will come up with two types of ghosts:

  • ghost – an abstract spirit in a cartoon style
  • ghost – the spirit of some person.

As a result, we will have a fun company of ghost characters.Ghost Character Design – Step by StepGhost Character Design – Step by Step

So – we start from simple shapes, very different, since there are no rules in the design of ghosts. We fit our characters into these forms, looking for a suitable solution. Add light and dark spots and refine the details.Ghost Character Design – Step by Step

If we look at the silhouettes, we can appreciate how successful the design is, and whether it is clear that these are silhouettes of ghosts. The absence of a fulcrum, the instability of postures and forms, helps to believe that this is a silunt of a ghost, and not a person or an object.Ghost Character Design – Step by Step

Next, we select the 1st character and draw him in different poses and emotional states.

It was difficult for me to choose only one character, because they are so different.  I decided to work out a few more characters in more detail. As a result, I have a group of ghosts that complement each other in a great way.

About Mark Horton

I'm Mark, an artist. I love to create pieces that make people feel something, whether it's happiness, sadness, or anger. I want my artwork to evoke a reaction in people and get them thinking about the world around them.

I grew up in a small town in Texas and always loved art. I would spend hours doodling in my notebooks during class and experimenting with different mediums. After high school, I decided to pursue art as a career and never looked back.

I've had several solo exhibitions throughout the United States, and my work has been featured in several magazines and online publications. I'm currently working on a series of paintings that explore the refugee crisis.
